A Senior Site Civil Engineer for a Solar Power Plant takes the technical foundations of a site engineer and scales them up to a leadership level. In this role, you aren't just supervising a crew; you are managing the entire civil engineering lifecycle of a massive utility-scale project (often spanning 500 to 2,000\+ acres). You own the civil budget, schedule, subcontractor contracts, and high-level engineering troubleshooting. Core Responsibilities1\. Construction Engineering \& Technical Oversight Design Review \& Value Engineering: Review civil, structural, and geotechnical designs (grading plans, hydrological reports, pile designs) before construction. Identify cost-saving modifications to grading, road layouts, and drainage. MMS \& Pile Optimization: Review pile pull-out test data and collaborate with structural teams to optimize the embedment depth of thousands of solar tracker piles, balancing structural safety with steel costs. Critical Infrastructure Civils: Oversee the structural execution of the project's high-value milestones: substation foundations, central inverter pads, and battery storage (BESS) containment areas. 2\. Project Management \& Delivery Schedule \& Milestones: Own the civil execution schedule (clearing, grading, piling, road networks). Ensure civil works stay ahead of mechanical assembly and electrical cabling teams to prevent costly bottleneck delays. Contractor \& Vendor Management: Manage heavy-civil subcontractors. Review and approve progress claims, invoices, technical queries (RFI), and negotiate variation/change orders. Resource Allocation: Optimize the deployment of heavy machinery (scrapers, compactors, pile drivers) and labor across multiple active zones of a vast site footprint. 3\. Interface, QA/QC \& Regulatory Compliance Cross-Discipline Alignment: Coordinate tightly with Senior Electrical Engineers to ensure underground cable trenching, conduit placements, and inverter foundation works are flawlessly synchronized. Environmental Oversight: Ensure strict adherence to environmental permits, specifically dust mitigation, local wildlife protections, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP). Sign-offs: Act as the final site authority for civil engineering handovers, approving the quality and structural integrity of work before mechanical installation begins. Required Qualifications \& SkillsEducation \& Experience Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. License: Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent regional charter/license is highly preferred, as you will often need to sign off on technical field revisions. Experience: 7 to 10\+ years in heavy civil construction, with a solid track record of at least 3 to 5 years specifically managing utility-scale solar projects (50MW\+ to gigawatt scale). Technical \& Soft Skills Solar Tracking Systems: Expert knowledge of major tracker vendor structural systems (e.g., Nextracker, ATI) and their tolerances for wind, terrain slope, and soil friction. Advanced Engineering Knowledge: Mastery of mass-earthwork balancing, hydrology/hydraulics software concepts, and geotechnical parameters. Contractual Acumen: Strong understanding of construction contracts (FIDIC, EPC frameworks) to protect the project from scope creep and contractor claims. Leadership under Pressure: Ability to lead teams and make critical, fast-paced technical decisions in remote, harsh environmental conditions. Senior vs. Mid-Level Site Engineer: What Changes? The shift from a standard Site Civil Engineer to a Senior role on a solar plant represents a move from execution to ownership: From "How" to "Why": A mid-level engineer checks if a pile is driven straight; a Senior engineer looks at why 5% of piles in a specific zone are hitting refusal early and coordinates a design change with the geotechnical firm. Commercial Responsibility: The Senior engineer manages millions of dollars in civil subcontracts and is responsible for keeping earthworks from going over budget.
