Role Summary The Back End Application Engineer / Architect owns the backend end-to-end: engineering data models, APIs, and integrations with scalability and security built in from day one. This role sets technical standards for delivery teams and ensures backend systems align with business workflows, compliance, and cloud best practices. Core Responsibilities Architecture Ownership: Lead end-to-end architecture across frontend, API layer, data, integrations, and deployment. Data Contracts: Establish versioned, validated contracts between backend and frontend, enforced in code and CI/CD. Cloud & Security: Define deployment architecture, CI/CD pipelines, and SOC-2-aware security baselines. Technical Discovery: Translate business workflows into system design in collaboration with stakeholders and UI/UX designers. Standards & Reviews: Set coding standards, record architecture decisions, decompose work, and review code. Data Architecture & Backend Engineering Relational Data Modeling: Design schemas on PostgreSQL (including JSONB, indexing, query optimization). ORM & SQL: Work fluently with Prisma or Drizzle, with fallback to raw SQL. Schema Management: Own migrations, versioning, transactions, and data integrity. Compliance Substrates: Implement audit trails, lifecycle state machines, and RBAC. API Design: Build APIs from scratch, including schema design, versioning, and contracts. Authentication: Implement OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, SSO, and RBAC. Async Processing: Build queues, jobs, and webhooks. Integration Engineering CRM/MAP/ERP Integrations: Architect integrations behind provider interfaces. Integration Patterns: Design event handling, data sync, and reconciliation. Error Handling: Manage retries, rate limits, and failure recovery. AI/LLM Integration LLM Features: Integrate structured outputs with provider abstraction. Evaluation: Build regression testing for AI outputs. Document Processing: Handle PDF/XML structured extraction. Security, Cloud, and Tooling Backend Security: Secure API design, secrets management, encryption, dependency checks. Cloud Infrastructure: Operate managed compute, databases, IAM on GCP/AWS/Azure. Infrastructure-as-Code: Apply Terraform for repeatable environments. AI-Assisted Development: Set guardrails for responsible AI tooling use. Qualifications Backend Engineering: Senior-level experience in TypeScript/Python with strong API design. Data Modeling: Expertise in relational schemas, migrations, and performance tuning. ORM Experience: Familiarity with modern ORMs plus raw SQL. Auth Patterns: Strong knowledge of authentication/authorization. Cloud Architecture: Hands-on GCP/AWS/Azure with Terraform. Integration Experience: CRM/MAP/ERP provider abstractions. Security Mindset: Audit trails, least privilege, secrets management. Regulated Environments: Healthcare, life sciences, or similar preferred. Code Reviews: Skilled in reviewing and refining code from product specs.
