Key Responsibilities Architecture & Hands-On Engineering Own the end-to-end architecture of the platform — apps, APIs, data pipelines, databases and infrastructure and how they all connect. Stay genuinely hands-on: write production code, raise PRs, and review the team's PRs regularly. Lead the codebase by example. Work full-stack — Python (FastAPI), React, PostgreSQL + PostGIS, geospatial processing — and design robust APIs for internal, client and partner use. Build integrations with third-party services, in particular Stripe (payments, subscriptions, webhooks) and external / partner APIs. Lead and scale our AI-powered features — including the new AI widget — integrating LLMs and AI services, and championing AI-assisted development. Set and enforce engineering standards (code review, testing, quality) and continuously improve the dev lifecycle, tooling and CI/CD. Delivery & Team Leadership Own delivery: scope, plan and ship on time, from technical spec through release, incident and problem management. Run the team's operating rhythm — stand-ups, sprint planning, estimation and retros — and keep the board accurate and moving. This is your responsibility, not the COO's. Write clear specs and tickets, break work down, assign it, and actively push it through to release — unblocking engineers and holding the team to committed timelines, output and attendance. Lead a remote team across Australia and the Philippines; coach and mentor, build a high-performance culture, and hire, grow and manage performance. Give the COO clear KPIs and status on delivery, capacity and risk, and communicate technical trade-offs in plain language. Cloud, Security & DevOps Architect and manage AWS (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, IAM, VPC) for a scalable, reliable, cost-effective platform. Own security across the platform — secure SDLC, IAM and access control, secrets management, encryption of data in transit and at rest, dependency and vulnerability management, and incident response —protecting customer data as a first-class priority. Own DevOps: infrastructure as code (Terraform / CDK), Docker, automated testing, monitoring and alerting (e.g. Sentry), and production availability, performance and data integrity. Required Skills & Experience Essential 10+ years in software development, including proven experience leading and managing engineering teams and delivery. Strong, current, hands-on engineer — full-stack with a backend lean — who still writes and reviews code daily. Deep Python (FastAPI or similar: REST APIs, service architecture, data pipelines) and strong React. Proven, hands-on AWS experience (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, SQS, API Gateway, IAM, VPC) and strong PostgreSQL (schema design, query optimisation). A solutions architect who connects apps, APIs and third-party services — including Stripe (payments, subscriptions, webhooks) — into a coherent whole. Practical experience building AI-powered features / integrating AI / LLM services, and using AI-assisted coding tools. Strong grounding in application security and secure SDLC (IAM, secrets management, encryption, vulnerability management). Solid DevOps: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containerisation and Git / GitHub, in an Agile/Scrum delivery environment. A self-driven, accountable operator who owns their hours and output and pushes a team to deliver — while being approachable and collaborative. Highly Desirable You don't need an agriculture background — we're happy to teach the domain to the right engineer. Experience processing large or complex datasets, and working with geospatial / GIS data (PostGIS, numpy, rasterio, shapely, fiona). Exposure to remote sensing or satellite imagery is a bonus — a niche area we're glad to help the right person grow into. Familiarity with data engineering / ML deployment, and SOC 2 / ISO 27001 or similar compliance frameworks. Experience in a fast-paced start-up or scale-up environment.
