Lumawig is seeking a highly experienced Senior AI Engineer to join our team on a project-based, independent contractor or freelance basis. This role is ideal for a senior-level engineer with strong software engineering experience and hands-on experience building AI-powered applications and workflows. You will work closely with Lumawig’s internal teams to design, develop, integrate, and improve practical AI solutions across different projects and use cases. Key Responsibilities AI Development & Implementation Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications and features using modern AI technologies. Build and integrate AI workflows using LLMs, AI APIs, agents, and external tools. Develop AI solutions such as intelligent assistants, automation workflows, document processing, data extraction, classification, and content generation. Integrate AI models and services into existing applications through APIs and backend systems. Select appropriate AI models, tools, and approaches based on project requirements, performance, and cost. Explore and evaluate new AI models, frameworks, and technologies that can improve existing products and workflows. AI Workflow & Optimization Design and improve AI workflows to produce accurate, consistent, and reliable results. Apply prompt engineering, structured outputs, context management, and function/tool calling to improve AI performance. Build and maintain RAG workflows, embeddings, vector search, and knowledge-based AI systems where appropriate. Develop and improve AI agents and multi-step workflows when required. Evaluate AI outputs and identify issues such as hallucinations, inconsistent responses, or incorrect tool usage. Optimize AI applications for accuracy, performance, latency, reliability, and cost. Software Development & Integration Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from planning and development through testing and deployment. Develop backend services and APIs using Python and Django or similar technologies. Build and integrate frontend components using VueJS or ReactJS when required. Design and work with databases and data structures that support AI and application workflows. Integrate RESTful or GraphQL services and third-party APIs. Debug, test, and optimize applications for performance, security, and reliability. Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code and participate in code reviews. Work with technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Celery, and cloud platforms where appropriate. AI-Assisted Development Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, or similar tools for coding, debugging, research, documentation, testing, and code review. Apply effective prompt engineering when working with AI development tools. Review and validate AI-generated code and outputs to ensure they meet technical and quality standards. Identify opportunities to use AI tools to improve development speed, testing, code quality, and engineering workflows. Engineering & Collaboration Work closely with developers, project managers, QA, and other team members throughout the development process. Translate business and technical requirements into practical AI and software solutions. Participate in technical discussions, sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and other project meetings. Identify technical risks, blockers, and opportunities for improvement. Adapt quickly to new AI technologies, frameworks, tools, and project requirements. Required Qualifications At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with hands-on experience building, integrating, or developing AI-powered applications and workflows. Strong experience with Python and backend development, preferably with Django or similar frameworks. Hands-on experience with LLMs and AI APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or similar platforms. Experience building and integrating AI workflows into production applications. Strong understanding of prompt engineering, context management, structured outputs, and AI response optimization. Experience with RAG, embeddings, vector databases, or AI search workflows. Experience with AI agents, tool/function calling, or multi-step AI workflows. Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, or similar tools for coding, debugging, and code review. Strong understanding of APIs, databases, data processing, and system integration. Experience with frontend technologies such as VueJS or ReactJS. Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and problem-solving skills. Ability to evaluate AI-generated code and outputs and make appropriate technical improvements. Ability to quickly learn and work with new AI models, frameworks, tools, and programming languages. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Comfortable working independently as a contractor or freelancer while maintaining accountability and delivery standards. Nice to Have Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, or similar AI frameworks. Experience with AI evaluation, observability, or monitoring. Experience with fine-tuning, model evaluation, or machine learning pipelines. Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Celery, AWS, GCP, or Azure. Experience with AI automation platforms such as n8n or similar tools. Experience with multimodal AI, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, or computer vision. Experience designing scalable AI systems and making high-level technical decisions. Temporal, or another durable execution engine such as Restate, Inngest, DBOS or Step Functions Server-sent events, WebSockets and Redis Streams in Python Familiarity with AI security, data privacy, and responsible AI practices.
