Job Description

ABOUT YOU You are the person in the comments. Not scrolling past them, in them, replying, asking, defusing, and building the kind of relationship that turns a follower into someone who defends the brand unprompted. You understand that a community is not an audience. An audience watches. A community talks back, and you know how to give them a reason to. You work closely with the Social Media Manager without needing to be assigned every task. They have their own strategy and campaigns. You own what happens once the content is live, and you feed back what you learn so the next campaign is sharper. You are genuinely good with numbers and honest about them. Sentiment, share of voice, engagement rate, response time, and follower quality all mean something specific to you, and you can tell the difference between a spike that matters and a spike that does not. You listen to the market properly. You track what people say about the brand, what they say about competitors, and what they say about the category, and you surface the pattern before anyone has to ask for it. You have judgement under pressure. When a thread turns, you know what to answer publicly, what to take to DMs, what to leave alone, and what to escalate immediately. You write well and quickly, in the brand's voice, at whatever register the moment needs. Warm, dry, apologetic, or firm. You have worked in a startup, so you are comfortable building a community from a small base with no budget to buy your way there. THIS ROLE IS NOT A GOOD FIT IF YOU See community management as customer service ticket clearing Copy and paste the same reply across every comment Only engage when a campaign is running Find it hard to hold a professional tone with a hostile or unreasonable person Escalate everything rather than exercising judgement, or escalate nothing and hope it passes Report numbers without interpreting them Only track your own channels and ignore what competitors and the wider category are doing Need the Social Media Manager to assign you every task Are uncomfortable flagging that sentiment is falling Go quiet when a situation gets difficult Are looking for part-time, freelance, or project-based work Plan to hold this alongside another full-time role Want something temporary while you look for a permanent position Responsibilities Community management Own day to day engagement across all active platforms, including comments, mentions, direct messages, tags, and reviews Maintain consistent response times against agreed service levels Grow and nurture the community through proactive outreach, not just reactive replies Identify and build relationships with advocates, superfans, and repeat contributors Seed and sustain conversation in owned spaces such as groups, Discord, or forums where relevant Surface user generated content and route it for approval and reuse Brand and market health Run social listening across brand mentions, competitor activity, and category conversation Track sentiment over time and report shifts with context on what caused them Monitor share of voice against named competitors Produce a regular market health summary covering what the audience is saying, what is changing, and what the brand should do about it Flag emerging risks, recurring complaints, and misinformation early Metrics and reporting Own community and engagement reporting, including engagement rate, response time, follower growth and quality, sentiment, and share of voice Maintain reporting dashboards so numbers are current and comparable week to week Feed engagement insight into campaign planning with the Social Media Manager Contribute to post-campaign reviews with the community and sentiment view Escalation and moderation Moderate against agreed community guidelines, consistently and fairly Follow the escalation path for complaints, reputational risk, and crisis moments Maintain and update response frameworks and approved holding statements Document recurring issues and pass them to the relevant team Collaboration Work alongside the Social Media Manager on content planning, informed by what the community actually responds to Provide the creative team with real audience language, questions, and objections to use in content Support influencer, partner, and collaboration activity where community touchpoints are involved Requirements Education Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, media, psychology, or a related field.
